Harriet Beecher Stowe: 1811-1896 Harriet was an American abolitionist who wrote Uncle Toms Cabin. Her father Lyman Beecher, pastor of the Congregational Church in Litchfield, and her brother was the famous Congregational preacher Henry Ward Beecher. She wrote the novel after her child had pasted and realized the pain the the slaves endured when they were separated from their family. She became a well respected novelist during the Civil war era and continued on to write more novels.

Charlies Sumner: was a Massashusents senetor who was an Abolishinast, was known his efforts to achieve and mmaintain civil rights. As he continued his antislavery acts, he gave a speech in 1856 called "Crimes Against Kansas Speech," in which slavery was then not per pitted in Kansas. During this speech he also attacked one of his colleages Andrew P butler of South Carolina, and following the speech one of BUllters releative who was distrought over Bulters public humiliation brutaly assulted Sumner in which tool him 3 years to recover and he had to take a break from the Senate. he then returned to the senate in 1859 and continued in an attempt to gain African americans sufferage and Civil Rights.

John Brown:1800-1859 Was an abolishionist and liked to "fight fire with fire." he moved to kansas with his 5 sons and lead small raids againts the pro-slavery people. on 1859 he lead a large raid against the pro-slavery people in Harpers Ferry virginia. The government then stepped in and he was charged with tresion and untilitly hanged in 1859. By leading small raids, Brown, gave the South reson to worrie in which the Conferterace was createed. With borwns abolitionist and strong behavior he utimitly lead to the start of the confederance.

Stephan Douglas: (1813-1861) was an Illinois politician and in the Senate. He was know for competinging with Abraham Lincoln for senate but untimatly Douglas one the senate posiion and Lincoln won the Presidential position. In 1854 Douglas was for the Kansas- Nebraska act which was to allow the settlers of the Missori territories to decide whether they want slavery or not. Douglas's actions lead to the repeal of the Missory Compermise in 1820. And ulimatly created the antislavery Republican party from the hieghten polictical tension he caused.

Abraham Lincoln:1809-1865 Lincoln was the 16th president and lead the Union in victory of the civil war and ended slavery. He was the first Republican president on record at that time. Licoln decleared the South Carolina secession illegal and during the 4 year civil war the Union, in the end won. he instituded the Emancipation Proctimation which was though on slavery in the south. Lincoln gave the speech " Guettesburg Adrees" and in this short speech brought America back to ints founding principles. Lincoln was assasinated in April of 1865 giving way to continuing Reconstroction of America

Jefferson Davis: 1808-1889 He was the First and only President of the Confederatace. Davis originally did not want the job he wanted a job in the military operations. Throughout his reign he had fights with people because he did not want to hear people who oposed his thoughts and he also appointed people who were unfit for high leadership postions and that also caused more conflict. He and other companions then fleed the South from the advancing Union Army. He was imprisoned and eventually got out and died in 1889.

Ulysses S. Grant: (1822-1885) served as commander in chief of the Union army during the Civil War, leading the North to victory. Grant later became the eighteenth President of the United States His victories at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Vicksburg and Chattanooga convinced Lincoln to promote him to head all Union armies. After the battle at Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender on 9 April 1865.

Robert E. Lee: 1807-1870 Lee was a great general of the confederate army. He was talented at thinking of battle strategy. Originally Lincoln offered him to be general of the Union but Lee declined and accepted the Geneal postion of the confederate army because his home town was virginia. He eventually surrendered to Grant in 1865.
